Only Double Major Students have to ratify COMPULSORY INTERNSHIP FORM in the internship application process.

WHAT IS AN INTERNSHIP? Internship is a practice held in “architecturally related” public or private companies at the end of the second term. If the schedule of the internship occur at the same time as the academic terms including summer term, internship dates must be approved by student’s academic advisor and internship commission should be informed.
HOW LONG DO INTERNSHIPS LAST? Internship duration is 40 days. 20 days must be held as office internship and the other 20 days would be for construction. 20 days must be continuous, an internship period could not be divided. If the student will continue her/his internship during Saturdays, an approval document by the company must be included in the report folder.
Internship Report

Internship report is a series of written and visual documents including all the activities and works held by the student during the internship. The folder of internship report will include the documents below in the same order: 

  • Cover
  • Internship Application Form – print of the student’s online application
  • Corporation Letter of Approval
  • Insurance Document (The Insurance Document is required for the abroad internships)
  • An approval document for working at the weekends (if Saturdays are to be included) 
  • Weekly Report (Works held during a week in details)
  • Daily reports (1 page per day with visual documents and written records)
  • Visual documents (Plans, sections, views, photographs of the related Project)
  • Corporation Internship Review Form (A review document written by the mentioned contact person from the company). The form will be in a closed envelope, signed and stamped.

The students are required to submit the report’ sections and documents in a single file folder, A4 size paper – spiral bound document including digital submission via CD.

The students can get access to IKU Internship Instruction from Istanbul Kultur University Legislation System. By force of Senatus Consultum dated March 31, 2016, valid starting from 2015-2016 Academic Year, the Internship I and II courses’ credits are not included as course credits in the transcript. The Senatus Consultum is applied all the students who have done their internship as of this date, regardless of which term the student is enrolled in.

WHAT IS THE PROCESS OF APPLYING TO THE COMPULSORY INTERNSHIP?

All prospective students must apply to the compulsory internship via ONLINE FORM by entering their students accounts. On the online form, the students are required to upload the scanned document  CORPORATION LETTER OF APPROVAL which the students get it signed to the corporation they want to work in. Only Double Major Students have to ratify COMPULSORY INTERNSHIP FORM in the internship application process. After advisor approval, the students file are created and their interns are insured by the Department Financial Affairs. The application must be completed 10 DAYS BEFORE the first day of internship! 

WHAT IS THE PROCESS OF APPLYING TO THE OPTIONAL INTERNSHIP?

Optional Internship duration is max. 40 days. The students should apply to the optional internship via a petition to the Department of Architecture. The student’s request is approved by the Faculty Administrative Committee. After the ratification, the student can apply to the internship via ONLINE FORM in which they should select “optional internship” option.

WHAT TO DELIVER TO INTERNSHIP COMMISSION AT THE END OF THE INTERNSHIP?

  • Student must deliver the INTERNSHIP REPORTS (OFFICE AND CONSTRUCTION) to the commission.
  • Internship reports and Internship review forms must be assigned to Internship Commission by the announced date. In each term, the schedule and deadline for handing the reports are being announced on the Internship Board by the commission.
  • Reports must be submitted to the comission members in the following year of internship. Older reports cannot be submitted.

WHAT ARE THE CRITERIAS FOR REVIEWING THE INTERNSHIP REPORT?

  • All the documents should be cased / foldered in the order and handed as one.
  • All the documents in the report, including the photograph pages, must be signed and stamped by the contact person of the company.
  • Report must be comprehensive enough to explain the activities during the internship process.
  • The language of the report must be clear, using passive voice. (such as …was done …was observed)
  • Report must be written via computer, as handwriting reports will not be accepted.
  • In the case of more than one student interns in a company at the same period, their reports must be exactly different from each other. If the reports are same, both the students re-write the returned reports.
  • Internship reports are inquired in accordance within the indicated instructions and evaluated as “Passed / Failed”. The first internship is listed within the course name of INTERNSHIP 1 (4 ECTS) at 7th academic term and the second one, INTERNSHIP II (4 ECTS) at the 8th term. These courses are not counted in GPA.

IS IT POSSIBLE TO MAKE AN INTERNSHIP ABROAD?

Internship abroad could be accepted with 2 possible conditions:

2. A foreign company to be determined by the student:

  • Student contacts with the company to determine the exact dates and details of the internship.
  • ONLINE APPLICATION needs to be held by the student via his/her student account. It is advised for the student to insure the internship as university is not responsible for insuring the international internships but the local ones.
  • Internship period
  • Internship reports need to be written in both languages, English and Turkish, and must be approved by the company to be submitted to Internship Commission. (If the student is a foreign student who does not know Turkish, only English report would be necessary)

WHAT IS THE INTERNSHIP PROTOCOL?

Our university has 12 protocols with renowned Turkish architecture firms, who can give the students the opportunity to work in these firms to gain experience, improve skills, and see the inner workings of an everyday architectural practice.

WHAT ARE THE CRITERIAS OF STUDENT APPLICATIONS TO THE FIRMS HAVING INTERNSHIP PROTOCOL?

The students who has min. 3.00 Grade Point Average (GPA) can apply to work in one of the firms having internship protocols with our university. The students are required to submit the Internship Protocol Application Form. The printed application form and transcript of records should be submitted to the Internship Commission in the days of application, which are announced on the website. The Internship Commission evaluates all the applications and the students are informed about the outcome of the selection via e-mails.

Department of Interior Architecture and Environmental Design Internship Requirements being valid from 2025-2026 Academic Semester

Description Compulsory internship of the Architecture Faculty, Interior Architecture and Environmental Design Department is a practical work done in public or private workplaces in the fields related to interior architecture starting from the end of the fourth semester until the graduation. In the Department of Interior Architecture and Environmental Design, there are two internship courses: IAD4003 Office Internship, and IAD6003 Construction Site Internship. IAD4003 is included in the Fourth Semester (2 ECTS), IAD6003 is included in the Third Semester (2 ECTS) and does not participate in the GNO.
Duration The compulsory internship duration in the Architecture Faculty, Interior Architecture and Environmental Design Department is 40 workdays. The first part of this study consisting of 20 days will be completed as construction site internship and the other 20 days will be completed as office internship (interior design and reinforcement design offices and institutions, etc.). The 20-day internship duration is required to be completed at once and cannot be divided. In case of being working on Saturdays; an approved document from the institution indicated that Saturdays are workdays is required to be submitted in the report. It is absolutely not possible to work on Sundays, Public Holidays and Religious Holidays.
Procedure The internship student is required to firstly fill out the internship approval form (you can find the relevant document below) and have the form signed and stamped by the authorized person at the institution. Afterwards this document are required to be upload to the internship management system and the related sections of the internship management system must be filled. The student is required to do this procedure at least 10 days prior to the internship. (International students must obtain an E-Exemption Document in order to apply for an internship. You can review the steps regarding the process here. Students studying under international student status who will start their internship outside of Turkey do not require this document. They must fill out the 'International Student Abroad Internship Notification Form' shared below and submit it to the committee.) The student starts the internship after completing all the necessary approvals; first from the advisor and then from the financial affairs. If the internship is done during the semester break, the student should choose the IAD4003 or IAD6003 course from automation in the spring semester following the semester break, and if the internship is done during the summer break, the student should choose the related course from automation in the fall semester following the summer break. Finally, they must submit their internship report, detailing their entire internship experience, on the date announced by the internship commission via CATS.
Internship Report

Documents required being included in the internship report respectively;

  • Internship Report Cover Page (It must be signed and stamped by the authorized Interior Designer, Architect or Civil Engineer from the institution/firm.)
  • Signed and stamped document taken by the authorized person indicates that the student worked on Saturdays in the institutions where Saturdays are workdays. (If the student had worked these days)
  • SGK İşe Giriş and SGK İşten Ayrılış Bildirgesi obtained via e-Government
  • General Report (Daily works done by the student should be summarized in this section.)
  • Daily Report (Daily works done by the student should be written in detail in this section. At least one page per day should be written.)
  • Visual Documents (The visual documents of the student’s works during the internship period; plans, sections, views, photographs or any other documents related with the projects that the student worked on.)
  • Internship Evaluation Form (The document that evaluates the internship period of the student, approved by the authorized person of the institution.) The evaluation form will be submit as stamped, signed and sealed envelope.

Internship Report Format and Submission Requirements:

  • Students are obliged to prepare their reports according to the form and contents defined in the attached files. 
  • All documents of the report must be fully bounded (spiral bound) as a whole.
  • All documents in the form including photos, drawings, etc. must be signed and stamped by the authorities of the firm. 
  • The report should be comprehensive enough to convey the student's activities during the internship.
  • The report should be written in a proper English, in a passive language (such as “… made… seen….”)
  • The report must be written with computer. Handwritten reports will not be accepted.
  • Except for the "Internship Evaluation Form," which must be submitted in person with a sealed envelope and stamped signature, all other report pages must be scanned sequentially and legibly and uploaded as .pdf files to the assignment in CATs by the deadline.
  • Internship reports of students who do their internships together at the same firm same time must not be similar. Identical reports will be returned and requested to be rewritten.
  • Students of Interior Architecture and Environmental Design Turkish Program will prepare their reports in Turkish,
  • Students of Interior Architecture and Environmental Design English  Program will prepare their reports in English.

Internship Report  Submission Dates:

Report submission deadlines are announced on the CATs website, which is open for the relevant period. The deadlines are determined according to the following criteria. Internship reports are submitted to the Interior Architecture and Environmental Design Internship Commission.


Internship Report Evaluation Process and Criteria
After the submission of the internship reports, the internship reports are evaluated by the internship commission. If the internship report is deemed insufficient, the internship committee will inform the student of the deficiencies via CATs, requesting revisions, or, if the work done during the internship is deemed inadequate, will require them to repeat the internship. In this case, the internship course in the automation system is indicated with the “Z” letter. In case of the internship work and the submitted report is sufficient, the internship course is indicated with the “Y” letter in the automation system.
 

You can access the IKU Internship Directive from Istanbul Kultur University "Legislation" system. In accordance with the decision taken in the Senate dated 31.03.2016, the credits of Internship I and Internship II courses will not be counted as an extra course load being valid from 2015-16 Academic Year. The decision covers all students who have done internship after that date, regardless of the registration term of the student.

Students who have CGPA over 3.00 can proceed their Internship Trainings at following firms which have protocols signed with İKÜ Rectorate, with the approval of Internship Comission. Those students who would like to do their internships at these firms must apply to Internship Comission with their recent transcripts.
